Skin Care in Winter.

Blog Dr. Levent Ünal 11 August 2026

In winter many people notice dryness, tightness and sometimes flaking on their skin. The reason is that weather conditions strain the skin's moisture balance. In this article I want to explain in plain language how you can support your skin in winter.

Why skin gets dry in winter

Cold air and low humidity reduce the moisture at the skin surface. Heaters in indoor spaces also lower the air's humidity. Hot, long showers can weaken the skin's natural oil barrier. When these factors combine, the skin dries more easily.

How cleansing should be

In winter, gentler products can be preferred over stripping, heavily foaming cleansers. Washing the face with very hot water increases dryness, so lukewarm water is more suitable. Applying moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp after cleansing is more effective.

Moisturizing

Richer moisturizers usually give better support in winter. Products with components that help hold moisture can be preferred. Thin skinned areas such as hands, lips and the eye area may need extra care.

Do not skip sun protection

Even though the sun's effect seems lower in winter, daylight still reaches the skin. So it is important not to drop daytime sun protection. Reflected light, especially on snowy, clear days, can increase the effect.

Support from within

Drinking enough water helps the skin's moisture balance. Using a humidifier indoors to stop the air from getting too dry can also help. These simple habits reflect positively on the skin's overall condition.

To sum up

A winter routine that protects the skin is built on gentle cleansing, regular moisturizing and sun protection. If your skin does not improve despite dryness, or if you have redness or itching, it is wise to consult a doctor. Every skin is different and needs vary from person to person.
