G5 massage is a body massage performed with a device that transmits deep, rhythmic mechanical vibration into the tissue. The pressure and rhythm that a therapist's hands cannot hold steady for long because they tire can be maintained at the same level throughout the session with this device. Interchangeable heads make it possible to work both superficially and more deeply within the same session. The aim is to mobilise the area mechanically, ease muscle tension and support circulation.
What G5 massage is for
Long hours sitting at a desk, busy days on your feet and irregular exercise habits show up as heaviness in the legs, tightness across the back and shoulders, and a congested feeling in the tissue. G5 massage is considered as a way of relieving that picture. It can also be planned alongside other body treatments, either as a step that prepares the tissue or as one that supports relaxation afterwards. It is not a solution for the appearance of cellulite on its own, though it can be considered as part of a broader programme.
Which areas are treated
- Legs and calves, where heaviness is most often described
- Buttocks and thighs
- Lower and upper back
- Shoulders and the base of the neck
- The abdomen, with a suitable head and gentler settings
- Arms
It is not used on the face. Bony prominences and areas with varicose veins are avoided.
Who it suits, and where care is needed
It is considered for people bothered by muscle tension, fatigue and heaviness in the legs, and for those who find it hard to exercise regularly. It can also be thought of by people who want to support recovery after sport. On the other hand, care is needed with pronounced varicose veins or a history of vessel blockage, clotting disorders and blood thinning medication, open wounds, eczema or active skin infection in the area, recent surgery, fractures and osteoporosis, pregnancy and uncontrolled heart disease. Suitability is decided through a medical assessment.
How the session proceeds
You lie comfortably on the treatment couch and the area to be worked on is exposed. Massage oil or cream is applied to provide glide, which the head needs in order to travel without dragging the skin. A suitable head is chosen for the area and the goal: softer heads for superficial work over broad areas, firmer textured heads for a deeper kneading effect. The device is moved across the area in steady strokes that follow lymph flow and the direction of the muscle fibres. Vibration intensity is adjusted during the session according to how it feels to you. At the end the area is cleaned.
When effects appear and how long they last
For most people the sense of relief and lightness begins during the session itself and is clear straight afterwards. The reduction in muscle tension can last a few days. Rather than a lasting change, this is a supportive method that makes sense when repeated regularly, so it is usually planned as sessions at set intervals. Results vary from person to person and are influenced by nutrition, water intake and activity habits.
Aftercare
Paying attention to water intake after the session is advised. Most people continue their day exactly as normal. On sensitive skin a temporary pinkness is normal and settles quickly. Areas worked more intensively can feel slightly tender the next day; this is noted so the settings can be adjusted at the following session. Avoiding very hot showers and saunas on the same day and taking a gentle walk are commonly advised.
Points that are often confused
G5 massage is not a slimming method. The lightness felt after a session relates to fluid movement in the tissue and does not mean fat tissue has been reduced. Another mix up is assuming G5 is the same as lymphatic drainage; lymphatic drainage uses far gentler pressure with a specific technique that follows lymph flow, whereas G5 is deep, mechanical work. Which one suits you is decided together according to the nature of your complaint.
