Underarm brightening is the superficial application of tone evening and nourishing blends for darkening in the underarm skin. The skin here is thin, under constant friction and holds a high level of moisture. Shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweating and some deodorant ingredients can all set the stage for an increase in pigment over time. At his clinic in Nişantaşı, İstanbul, Dr. Levent Ünal plans this treatment according to what the examination shows.
What underarm brightening addresses
The aim is a more even looking tone in the area. Darkening, however, does not come from one single mechanism. In some people it is pigment increase following repeated irritation, in others the marks left after waxing and shaving, and in others still a thickening and roughening of the skin. Weight, hormonal status and certain systemic conditions can also feed into the picture. The cause therefore has to be distinguished first; a brightening treatment alone is not appropriate for every presentation.
Which areas and situations it covers
- Underarm: tone darkening linked to friction and shaving.
- The transition towards the inner arm: uneven tone.
- Discomfort with the appearance that leads to avoiding sleeveless clothing.
- A support plan drawn up alongside a change in hair removal method.
Who it suits
It is considered for people bothered by the difference in tone under the arm, whose cause has been assessed during a visit and whose expectations are realistic. Reviewing the habits that contribute to darkening is part of the plan.
Situations that need closer assessment include pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infection in the area, folliculitis, inflamed ingrown hairs or an open irritated patch, a bleeding disorder or the use of blood thinning medication, a known allergy to the blend, poorly controlled diabetes, and skin findings linked to insulin resistance. In some presentations the underlying condition needs addressing first. Suitability is decided by a medical assessment.
How a session goes
- Examination: skin tone, the degree of darkening and its possible causes are assessed. Hair removal habits, deodorant use and medical history are discussed.
- Preparation: the area is cleaned. It is preferable not to have shaved or waxed for a few days beforehand.
- Choosing the blend: a brightening and nourishing content suited to the area is selected.
- Application: the blend is distributed superficially across the underarm skin. The procedure is short.
- Review: aftercare is explained and the session interval is planned.
Onset and duration of the effect
The effect is gradual and is assessed as the sessions progress. Habits decide how well the result holds here; if friction, frequent shaving and irritation continue, the colour can darken again. Persistence depends on skin type, the cause of the darkening and the care routine. Results vary from person to person, and no outcome can be promised in advance.
Aftercare and what to watch for
- Do not shave or wax the area on the first day.
- Avoid deodorant and antiperspirant on the first day.
- Postpone sweaty exercise, sauna and steam rooms for a few days.
- Avoid tight clothing that presses or rubs, and choose cotton fabrics.
- Do not apply perfume or alcohol based products to the area.
Mild redness and short lived tenderness can be seen afterwards. This generally settles on its own.
Points that are often confused
The word brightening can be misleading. The aim is not to create a tone lighter than your natural skin colour, but to even out the difference caused by irritation and friction. Nobody's underarm is an exact match for the rest of their body.
Another misconception is expecting the treatment to be enough on its own. If friction, hair removal method and deodorant choice are not reviewed, the picture can return. Underarm darkening can also, in some cases, be a sign of a systemic condition such as insulin resistance, which is why the examination matters.
