Energy Based Devices.

Energy based devices is the umbrella name for treatments that deliver controlled energy to the skin and body in order to prompt the tissue's own repair and recovery response. That energy can take the form of light, radiofrequency, mechanical vibration, rhythmic pressure or a magnetic field. What they share is that they work without cutting the tissue and usually without a long interruption to daily life. At his clinic in Nişantaşı, İstanbul, Dr. Levent Ünal assesses these devices for needs ranging from skin tone and texture quality to a feeling of swelling and muscle tone.

What this category covers

Energy based devices are not a single method but a group of treatments that work on quite different physical principles. Each of the headings below targets something specific:

  • BBL (Broadband Light): broadband light for the look of uneven colour and redness in the skin.
  • Gold needle (microneedling radiofrequency): radiofrequency delivered from needle tips, aimed at skin texture and firmness.
  • Radiofrequency: a needle free, heat based way of supporting skin firmness.
  • G5 massage: mobilising an area with mechanical vibration and a kneading motion.
  • Lymphatic drainage: supporting lymph circulation and the management of a swollen, heavy feeling.
  • EMSculpt: producing intense muscle contractions with magnetic field energy.
  • Agassi: an energy treatment aimed at skin vitality and tone.
  • Buccal fat removal: a small surgical procedure on the cheek fat pad. It is not an energy based device treatment, but it is listed here because it comes up alongside these options when facial contour is planned.

What the energy does in the tissue

In light based devices the energy is absorbed by targets such as dark pigment or vessels close to the surface, producing a measured effect at those targets. In radiofrequency the energy turns into heat because of the tissue's resistance; the aim is controlled warming in the deeper layer while sparing the surface. Systems that apply mechanical vibration and rhythmic pressure move the tissue physically. In magnetic field devices the target is the muscle itself, which is driven to contract at an intensity you cannot reach voluntarily. Because the principles differ, so do the reasonable expectations.

Who these treatments suit

They are considered for people who are not thinking about surgery, or who do not yet need it, and who want to return to normal life quickly. Uneven skin tone, dull texture, mild laxity, a swollen and heavy feeling, or the wish to support muscle tone are common starting points. Choosing the right treatment depends on working out which layer the concern actually comes from. That distinction is made through a medical assessment, and the plan is built around the individual.

When a more careful assessment is needed

Recently tanned skin, active infection or an unhealed wound in the treatment area, pregnancy and breastfeeding, poorly controlled chronic illness, metal implants or devices such as a pacemaker in the area, medicines that increase light sensitivity, and certain circulatory and cardiac conditions are each reviewed separately. Some of these rule a treatment out entirely, while others only change the timing and the device settings. This is why it matters that you mention your medications and previous procedures at the visit.

How a session plan is built

Most energy based treatments are not finished in a single session. Tissue responds to the stimulus it is given over time, so sessions are spaced at intervals with a review in between. For some people it makes sense to sequence different devices so that they complement one another. The number of sessions, the intervals and the choice of device are planned individually, and results vary from person to person.

Aftercare and what to watch for

After light and heat based treatments, sun protection is the single most important point; neglecting it raises the chance of a colour change in the skin. Moisturising, staying away from hot showers and saunas for a short while, not rubbing the area and avoiding heavy exercise in the first days are common advice. After body treatments, water intake and regular movement are encouraged. Detailed advice is shared at the visit according to the device used and the person.

Points that are often confused

People often assume these devices are interchangeable, when in fact each addresses a different layer and a different problem. A light treatment aimed at pigment will not correct laxity, and a device aimed at muscle tone will not change the skin surface. Another common expectation is that these treatments cause weight loss or replace surgery. They are not a slimming method, and in advanced sagging they do not take the place of surgical options. Having the right expectation usually matters more than having the right device.
