Nasolabial filler aims to soften the fold that runs from the side of the nose toward the corner of the mouth and deepens over time. Everyone has this line to some degree and erasing it completely is not the goal; the goal is to soften the shadow so the face looks less severe. The nasolabial fold also marks the boundary between the cheek and the upper lip region, which is why judging it by the line alone is usually misleading.
Why the fold deepens
Several factors contribute. As mid face volume is lost, cheek tissue settles downward and creates a ridge along the upper edge of the fold. Years of repeated expression leave their mark on the skin. Sun exposure, smoking and weight changes can speed the process up. In some people the fold has simply been structurally prominent since youth.
Which area is targeted
- The nasolabial fold between the nostril and the mouth corner
- The deepest upper section of the fold, close to the side of the nose
- Support of the cheek tissue above the fold when needed
Who it suits, and who needs closer assessment
It is considered for people whose nasolabial lines have become prominent and who want the area to look softer. In some cases mid face support is planned first or alongside, because the fold often deepens as a consequence of volume loss above it rather than on its own. The area immediately beside the nostril deserves particular vascular care and technique matters here. Filler may not be appropriate during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with an active infection in the area, or in bleeding disorders. The decision is made at a medical examination.
How the session proceeds
The depth and length of the fold and its relationship with the mid face are assessed, including how the line behaves when you smile. The skin is cleaned, points and depth are marked and a topical anaesthetic can be applied for comfort. The filler is placed at the planned depth with a cannula or a fine needle depending on the structure of the fold, comparing the two sides as the work proceeds. The procedure is completed in an outpatient setting.
Onset and duration of the effect
The softening is noticeable right after the application, and the look becomes clearer once the mild swelling of the first days settles. Duration depends on the product, the amount and the person's metabolism and is usually described in months. Because the area around the mouth moves constantly, product is known to fade somewhat faster here. Results vary from person to person.
Aftercare
- Avoid pressing or rubbing the area on the first day.
- Stay away from very hot showers, saunas and intense exercise in the first days.
- It is sensible to skip heavy makeup on the day of the treatment.
- Mild swelling or small bruises can occur and are usually temporary.
- If you notice unexpected pain, blanching or a colour change, contact the clinic without delay.
Points that are often confused
The goal is not to erase the fold. A completely flattened nasolabial region does not look natural and can change the way you smile. Another misconception is that more product means a better result; excess here can create a feeling of heaviness at the mouth corner and an unnatural ridge. When the source of the fold is mid face volume loss, the right approach is usually to support that area first.
Factors that influence the result
- Skin thickness: product shows more readily in thin skin, so the amount is kept more conservative.
- Depth of the fold: in a deeply established fold the softening that can be expected is more limited.
- Weight change: ongoing significant weight loss or gain affects the result.
- Sun and smoking: both affect skin quality and therefore the long term appearance.
- Expression habits: product can fade faster in people who use the area around the mouth intensively.
These are weighed together at the visit and the plan is shaped accordingly. Results vary from person to person.
Useful things to know before the visit
Telling us about the medications you take, especially blood thinning drugs and supplements, any known allergies and any aesthetic treatments you have had before will shape the plan directly. If you have an important event coming up, arranging the treatment at least a week beforehand makes for a more comfortable process.
